Winter Mountain Weddings in WV: Why Book Wildhare

#TLDR Winter at elevation means short light, cold air, and busy ski weekends. I live here, shoot here year-round, and build the day around what winter actually allows. You get a clear plan, fast portraits that still look good, and coverage that feels calm.

I live where you get married

I am Kurt Schachner with Wildhare Media. I am based in the Marlinton area in Pocahontas County and have lived and shot in these mountains for over a decade.

That matters in winter. I know which roads hold ice, when the ridge fog sits, where wind hits hardest, and when the light drops behind the hills. You do not pay to fly someone in who is guessing. You get someone who already knows the parking lot, the porch that blocks wind, and the window wall that saves formals.

Winter timelines that fit the light

Sunset runs about 4:45 to 5:15pm in December and January. That sets the day.

I build winter days like this: ceremony midday, family groups right after while hands still work, then a short set for you two before dark. Back inside for food, toasts, and dancing while it is dark out. No standing around waiting on light that is not coming back.

High-elevation venues in winter stay busy through ski season. Lodging books fast and weekends run full. I will tell you straight if your start time fits the light for your date, and what to move if it does not.

Fast outside, comfortable inside

Cold makes photos look stiff when you stay out too long. I shoot winter portraits fast on purpose.

One outdoor spot close to heat. Family in order with a helper calling names. Ten solid minutes for you two beats 40 cold ones. Coats and blankets between frames, gloves and hand warmers ready, getting-ready and details done warm inside.

Days with me feel easy. Show up, we work the plan, you leave with what you need. Comfortable and pro, not stiff.

Lit for the room and the weather

Winter lodges go dark early. Wood walls, low ceilings, string lights. Pretty in person, tricky for photos.

I am a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) through PPA. That means consistent craft, not luck. I use available light when it works and add flash when the room or weather needs it, so skin looks normal and the room still feels like itself.

I also shoot commercial aerials as an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot. When wind and rules allow, winter aerials show the house, the land, and the snow in a way ground shots cannot.

Simple winter coverage

Most winter bookings look like this:

  • Elopement, about 2 hours, $750. You two, officiant, witness, one outdoor set plus coverage back inside.

  • Intimate, about 4 hours, $1,800. Getting ready through ceremony and portraits.

  • Half-day, about 6 hours, $2,800, or full day around 8 hours, $3,800, when you want the whole story plus reception.

Video add-ons if you want them: ceremony film $600, highlight film $1,000. Full-day video is custom quote. Clear scope so you know what you get.

Previews land in 24-48 hours. Full gallery follows in a few weeks depending on season.

What you walk away with

Snow, bare trees, ridge lines, fog when we get it. Overcast snow days shoot soft with no squinting. Night takes five minutes by the lodge lights. You get photos that look like winter, not like you survived it.

If you are looking at a winter date in the West Virginia mountains, send your venue, date, and headcount to kurt@wildhare.media. I will tell you if the timeline works and how I would shoot it.
